A few things to know

Good questions.

What is Ellis?

Ellis is a voice-first helper for older adults and their families. You ask out loud, in your own words, and Ellis makes the telephone call: the pharmacy about a refill, and your doctor’s office when the refills have run out. It writes down what they said, and your family can read it in their own app.

Who is Ellis for?

Older adults who want a little help with everyday tasks, and family members who want to stay connected.

What can I ask Ellis to help with?

A prescription refill, a new prescription when the refills have run out, what appointments are coming up and a reminder before each one, and ringing somebody your family listed.

Can Ellis book or change an appointment?

No. Ellis can say what is coming up and remind you about it, and if you want one moved it writes down what you asked for and tells your family. A person makes that call.

Are there medicines Ellis will not call about?

Yes. Ellis does not telephone about controlled medicines, and it says so rather than trying. A pharmacy will only take that request from the person themselves.

Does my loved one need to be good with technology?

No. Somebody in the family sets Ellis up and sends a link. Tapping it signs them in: no password to choose, no account to make, nothing to remember. After that it is one button to press, and talking.

How does family fit in?

Family set Ellis up on their own phone, adding the medicines, the pharmacy and the people to call. They see every call Ellis makes and what was said, and they are told when a call needs a person.

How is Ellis different from a general-purpose smart speaker?

A general-purpose speaker answers questions and sets timers. Ellis makes the calls that cost ten minutes and a hold queue, and it tells you what the pharmacy actually said rather than that it tried. It says who it is about to ring before it rings them, and family can follow along and help without taking over.

Is Ellis a medical alert system?

No. Ellis is not a medical device, and it does not call for help in an emergency. If falling is the worry, the right tool is a personal alarm that is worn and can be pressed. Ellis does not give medical advice either: for anything about medicines or symptoms, speak to a pharmacist or doctor.

Does Ellis watch or monitor my parent?

No. Ellis works by being asked. Your parent starts every request, and what family can see is what they can see too. Nothing is set up to report on somebody without their knowing.
